We are recording everything in a vintage all-analog studio and the demos sound incredible, so keep a heads up for that!)
Awon "Matte Black Soul" Location: Newport News, Virginia Release Date: Monday, December 8th Label: Don’t Sleep Records Producers: Phoniks, HDK, Ak, Awon, Rashard
"Matte Black Soul" is the fourth full length project from Newport News emcee Awon. The Virginia rhyme sayer is coming off a successful multi-year run that saw him release two critically acclaimed albums alongside producer Phoniks; 2013’s nostalgic ode to street life "Return to the Golden Era" and 2014’s "Dephacation" with Virginia emcee Dephlow. With his newest offering, Awon comes from a more personal perspective, this time tackling increasingly complex songwriting concepts over a selection of heavily soul-influenced productions. The album features offerings from a team of producers including the aforementioned Phoniks, who contributes six tracks, alongside HDK, Ak, Rashard, and Awon himself. Songs such as "Escaping Youth", which uses hair loss as a metaphor for aging and "Ying vs Yang", that explores the mind of a stick-up man trading rhymes back and forth with his subconscious, show the maturity of the 34-year-old songwriter. With 13-tracks of smooth soul beats and lyrics covering a wide variety of topics, Awon has created a unique, cohesive project that expands the boundaries of his current catalog as well as hip hop music today.
"For me ‘Matte Black Soul’ was initially taking it back to the essence of an emcee rhyming over just loops and breaks. As we sourced samples and made beat changes it evolved into something more personal. I can listen to this record and see a reflection of myself through sound. From the obvious to the obscure, Matte Black Soul reflects what I like to hear, or what I would listen to in my spare time. I’m a soulful dude and I’m at the age where myself and all of my friends are digging in the crates, sipping Henny, sparking that Piff talking about the good ole days. I wanted to make a record that sounded like a shot house at 4 am. Some good food, hard liquor, and soul music." – Awon
Awon is a hip-hop artist from Newport News, Virginia known for his nostalgic sound, jazzy beat selection and powerful, effortless flows. Born on March 6, 1980 in Brooklyn, New York, Awon was surrounded by hip-hop culture from a young age. His earliest memories are of graffiti lined subway cars and DJ’s having jams in his neighborhood of Fort Greene. His influences were other prominent emcees of the Golden Era like Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, and Slick Rick. As a youth, he relocated to Newport News, Virginia where his passion for hip hop and songwriting continued to grow.
In 2006, Awon appeared as a feature on Canibus’s Hip Hop For Sale album on a track produced by Nottz. At the time, he was working with a crew, The Soul Students, on his 2008 debut "Beautiful Loser" released by Goon Trax Records in Japan. Since then, collaborations with producers like Phoniks and Thomas Prime and support from worldwide music curators such as Majestic Casual and TheSoundYouNeed have seen the Virginia emcee amass an international following and millions of plays online.
"They quick to tell you lies anytime you askin questions/
Holdin back your mind, brain wash you to depression/
So you can get prescriptions, sip the syrup and make em rich/
Just like the contra killed the projects in ’86/
Today the crack is molly, percocets, the vics and oxy’s/
Bath salts and World Star got the baby’s catchin bodies/
They mommy’s twerk teamin and they son’s sit and watch/
And we wonder why the baby’s find refuge on the block/
It’s the same concept as the crabs in the pot/
Cuttin off eachother’s claws so they can get to the top/
But there’s really no escapin’ if you already hooked/
My best advice to swimmers: stay away from nets and hooks"
As Worcester, MA up-and-comer Joyner Lucas prepares for the January 20, 2015 release of “Along Came Joyner”, the follow-up to his 2013 release, “LFO’s" (Low Frequency Oscillators), he drops a track that screams as to why he will one day be considered one of the greatest to do it. He nails these verses, both forwards and backwards, in a way reminiscent of Chamillionaire’s Rap City freestyle (TBT), and he does it with ease. Much of Joyner’s recent work has shone a light on the societal ills of racism, most recently “Dear America (Don’t Shoot)” for which he made his own video comprised of nothing but police brutality footage. On “Back Words" Joyner is simply having fun. It’s a prelude of sorts to Part 2 of "Words With Friends”, one of Joyner’s most popular videos to date. There may not be a dance made up to this one but it will definitely leave you wondering how he does it. Odds are your favorite rapper can’t.
