#Smarterhiphop submission #NewMusic #Sydney based Wallace brings the melancholy with love song “Black Lake”, a swelling, metaphor driven indie/future-soul

Sounds like a mixture of Kimbra & Erykah Badu all mixed in with some indie soul goodness

Wallace brings the melancholy with love song "Black Lake", a swelling, metaphor driven indie/future-soul gem

Stream: https://soundcloud.com/wa_ll_ace/blacklake
Promo assets / track download: here

"WOW, what a voice… just good soul music" – Gilles Peterson

New Zealand born, Sydney based Wallace is back with another gem in "Black Lake". Co-written with Joel Quartermain (Eskimo Joe), the track is a love song laced with melancholy, which pushes the future-soul singer far out of her thematic comfort zone.

Based around a marimba-led melodic riff (harking back to her steel drum driven single "Raffled Roses"), "Black Lake" brings a dynamic, cinematic side to Wallace’s usually upbeat soul sound. Live drums and soaring strings battle with gentle lulls and her exquisite, unique vocal – indicating a wonderful growth and dexterity of genre for the initially jazz trained singer.

""Black Lake" attempts to capture the thoughts of someone who is in love and ready to commit to a person who isn’t. After finishing the tune, I was re-watching one of my favourite comedies, The Mighty Boosh, and realised with all the water imagery we’d weaved into our story, we’d accidentally written the song from the point of view of Old Gregg. We hadn’t landed on a title at this point so I suggested Black Lake, the home of the Baileys drinking, watercolour painting man himself." – Wallace

Wallace pushes with more of her quality brand of soul music, referencing the best parts of multiple genres to create an enticing sound that is irresistibly smooth, and possessing of a sophisticated sultriness.

THE STORY SO FAR

New Zealand has been a strong breeding ground for neo-soul artists over the years, with names like Kimbra, Electric Wire Hustle, and Fat Freddy’s Drop all gaining international acclaim. With all that rich history filling her veins, the now Sydney-based Kiwi might just be the next in line to find success.

Wallace is a refreshing talent, whose music is a mosaic of jazz, blues, hip-hop and soul. Her trademark jazz-influenced, soulful vocal and magnetic presence are a marker of a dynamic artist who vibrantly creates music which showcases her absorbing vocals and clever songwriting. Her lyrics are often influenced by literature, evident through the intricate wordplay she weaves to create poignant stories.

Her talents have seen her working with Dutch legends Kraak & Smaak, Australian hip-hop staples Thundamentals, touring and creating with young Zambian born, Australian-based rapper Sampa The Great, laying vocals over beats by Adventures of Godriguez, and working closely with producer Simon Cohen (producer of Justin Bieber’s global #1 Song “Love Yourself”).

Wallace has toured with Little Simz (UK), Lemaitre (NOR), Ngaiire, The Kite String Tangle, Kllo, as well playing to crowds at Australian festivals such as Listen Out Festival, Lost Paradise, St Kilda Fest, Hills Are Alive & Bigsound, to name a few.

Nue Drops "Fever" Music Video
300 Entertainment’s 1st Canadian Artist
""Fever" is vulnerable without being cloying – Nue’s flow is heavily processed and bleary eyed, but still sharply focused in its melding of the source of his pain and his dedication to party through." – The Fader
[Toronto, Ontario, Canada – September 7, 2017] Today, Toronto rapper, Nue released his new music video "Fever" from his critically-acclaimed project, Iroquois.

Nue exclusively told The Fader, "I had no intentions of a making a drugged out love song, but it just became that. I got into an argument with my girl at the time and I needed to numb myself. It was all about the vibe. I wanted the video to reflect the kind of uncertainty that I was feeling that day." Along with premiering "Fever," The Fader announced that Nue signed with 300 Entertainment, making him the first Canadian artist to sign with the independent label.

Nue’s sound is heavily influenced by his upbringing in Toronto’s Scarborough area. After completing high school, the anime illustrator decided to focus on music and began dropping singles in 2012. Gradually, the 21 year-old caught the attention of Toronto’s tastemakers and started to perform a major hometown festivals like North By Northeast. After the release of his two projects, Dreamchasers and 2017’s Iroquois, outlets such as Noisey, Pigeons and Planes, Hot New Hip-Hop, The Source, and The Fader started to take notice of Nue’s minimalistic and unorthodox sound. Now signed with 300 Entertainment, Nue will continue to make his footprint on the Toronto music scene and work on his fall EP.

Iroquois is currently available and be sure to take a look at the IR/918 Studios-directed "Fever" video now.

OYINDA DROPS NEW INTERACTIVE REMIX VIDEO PROJECT

FEATURING EMPRESS OF, RAMZOID AND CANTEEN KILLA

Nigerian-British artist Oyinda announces the release of a special remix video project featuring Empress Of, Ramzoid, and Canteen Killa. The interactive 360 videos were created by Pussykrew and you can view them below or stream the remixes on Spotify HERE.

Never Enough (Empress Of Remix), Flatline (Ramzoid Remix), and Serpentine (Canteen Killa Remix)

"Collaborating with Pussykrew on these visuals has allowed me to translate the tone of each track in such a vivid way. The original songs all have a sense of vulnerability within them that can be misunderstood as “weak” or “complaisant”. However, these remixes remove that notion completely. There’s not a lot of representation working in this medium either so it was important to me that each sculpt felt monumental; each pose felt determined. That’s why I pulled inspiration from Greek Mythology, The Terracotta Army, things I thought represented a timeless sense of power." – Oyinda to MILK

More information below

With the release of her second EP, Restless Minds, Nigerian-British artist Oyinda cements herself as music’s shadowy seductress, an antithesis to today’s radio-ready pop stars. Dubbed "R&B’s best kept secret" by Rolling Stone, Oyinda blurs the boundary of genre with her industrial synth sounds and classical music approach. As an independent producer, singer, songwriter, and director in New York City, Oyinda has created a sonic and visual world that is truly all her own, bringing an unparalleled level of production to her artistry. Look no further than her latest music video, for "Serpentine," made in collaboration with pussykrew, which blends reality with the virtual, elevating her visuals into something cybernetic and otherworldly—two things that seep into her live show. She’s been featured by V Magazine, VOGUE, Paper and Interview, FADER, Pigeons&Planes to name a few.

SoundCloud
For the latest single off his highly anticipated solo debut, Rockness A.P., Hip-Hop veteran Rock (of Heltah Skeltah) connects with Kuniva (of D12) to deliver snarling and slick threats on the menacing “Wishin,” produced by Pascal Zumaque.

The two emcees make for an immediately compelling duo, partially because they’re both known for their show-stealing verses alongside their affiliated crews. And on “Wishin,” they spit venom-filled rhymes at their opposition.

For Rock, that means using his trademark growl to make clever pop-culture references amidst some crazy wordplay (the way he raps “Brownsville, aka the Wish-A-Nia Woods” is hilarious). Kuniva’s right there with him, though, as he dubs himself the “hood version of Eddie Haskell” and likens his rhymes to Ice Cube’s on Death Certificate.

It’s wild to think that Rock has been in the game for more than 20 years—as part of Boot Camp Clik and one half of Heltah Skeltah—but is only just now releasing his debut as a solo artist. But the rapper himself is aware of that, and its title, Rockness A.P., is a reference to his former partner-in-rhyme. The A.P. stands for After Price, a loving nod to the late Sean Price, who sadly passed away in 2015.

“Wishin” is the fourth instant grat track ready for download off the iTunes’ pre-order for, Rockness A.P. In addition to Kuniva, the 14 track LP includes guest features from Method Man, Raekwon, Inspectah Deck, M.O.P., Ron Browz, Ras Kass, and more. The album, which is due out Sept 22, is now available for pre-order on CD as well as through the digital retailer of your choice via Digital Déjà Vu Records.
